Ask HN: Why are executives not willing to tolerate accountability?

Vice is shutting down, just read the statement that was put out. Lots of “thank you for your service” but no real meaningful words / admission of responsibility.

I’m not affected by this but it does give me some strong emotions that have caused difficulty for me at jobs over the years.

I can’t think of one of these “we’re firing everyone” letters I’ve read that has ever included one ounce of “this is my fault and I will be stepping down / paying back a bonus I got”.

There is an imbalance of ethics at best, or a willful lack of compassion at worst in the way these layoffs are conducted. I just want to understand why cruelty is such a necessary component.
