An uncle of mine (70yo+) who worked there for 20 years in an oil company and finally created his own company in the same space is now living in a gated community.

Power is delivered by a gated-community shared generator, as electricity is available from public services at most 50% of the time. Policing is also provided by a gated-community financed “police force”, since Johannesburg’s police force is more or less missing in action.

He wants to come back to Germany, since the living quality in south africa has declined so much it is almost unbearable.

This are just some first hand, anecdotal facts.
