Ask HN: Stuck on a Project, Strategies to Progress?
A lot of my prior software is unfinished, a fact that I can’t regret too much as for the most part it was open-source stuff that I built because I wanted to use it or I wanted to learn a technology.
Right now I’m building a website that I think will be useful and interesting for a technical crowd, but after a solid two weeks of work, I’m stuck on a difficult problem. In the past, I abandoned projects because their scope kept creeping, but here I have a clear list of features for my initial build and some potential future features that I won’t touch until after that point. I also used to jump to another part of a project when I got stuck, but I avoid that strategy now as I found that having multiple broken disparate systems was a lot harder than having one 😉
These two problems, plus Parkinson’s law of “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion” mean I’m at risk of creating another “forever project” instead of a great website. I want to get this one out! Any advice?
